Medical practices, like Metrowest Urology, face specific challenges when it comes to technology and patient privacy. National health information privacy standards have been issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The HIPAA Privacy Rule establishes national standards to protect patient’s medical records and other personal health information. This applies to health plans, health care clearinghouses, and those health care providers that conduct certain health care transactions electronically.  According to the Health Information Privacy Act appropriate safeguards must be taken to protect the privacy of personal health information, and sets limits and conditions on the uses and disclosures that may be made of such information without patient authorization. The Rule also gives patients rights over their health information, including rights to examine and obtain a copy of their health records, and to request corrections.

Spectra Networks recently worked with Metrowest Urology to transition their networks and merge two companies which required the technical expertise and experience to maintain medical compliance of HIPAA. Spectra Networks worked closely with the Metrowest team to merge all data and patient information while maintaining security and privacy of patient sensitive information.
