New Trends in Access Control
In the past few decades, access control technology, much like all of the digital world, has gone through some major improvements and transformations. Access control systems continue to evolve making them more convenient, secure and easy to use.
What are access controls that are currently being used by businesses and where are the emerging trends leading us in this technology? Let’s take a look.

What Is Access Control Technology?
For those new to the world of physical security, access control technology is used to manage who can view or gain access to digital data or a physical area. Access control systems are usually broken down into physical access control and logical access control systems.
Physical access control refers to limiting access to certain areas such as server rooms, offices, campuses, buildings and critical IT infrastructure. Logical access control refers to the control of who can view and use computer networks, system files and data.
Current Access Control Technology
We strongly endorse Verkada products such as their robust access control options. We suggest our clients explore their access control systems to add needed security to their buildings and IT assets.
Some of the Verkada products we recommend to our clients include Wireless Locks, Door Readers, Access Controllers and Access Credentials all accessed via the cloud. Not only do Verkada’s access control products seamlessly integrate with their video security systems, intercoms, alarms, and workplace options, but they can be managed remotely from anywhere, anytime.

Future Trends in Access Control
Not all access control systems are cloud-based. Many companies in this field are beginning to recognize the benefits of having remote access all on one screen from anywhere there is an Internet connection. In recent years, the trend has shifted to cloud-based security systems and will continue to do so over the next decade.
Additional trends that will continue into 2024 are the expansion of Touchless Access Controls, a growth in Wearable Devices, and using AI to enhance security access.
Touchless Access Controls is a key trending concept that is gaining popularity. Look for a shift away from traditional modes of gaining access and the addition of motion sensing technology that requires a specific motion at a required distance to access the area. Also, watch for enhanced mobile experiences that allow for the unlocking of a door using a mobile device. Biometric access controls such as fingerprints, retinal scans, or facial identification will also continue to improve security in the realm of access control technology.
Wearable Devices are another area that will be evolving in 2024. Rings, wristbands, watches, and other forms of jewelry will be integrated into access control systems. By using mobile devices such as smartphones and smartwatches, apps will be able to use Bluetooth to access entrances to designated areas through wearable devices named above.
AI will continue to become an integral part of access control. AI tools will allow for predictive analytics, anomaly detection, and behavior-based authentication.
